“Inside” Bets

These are bets that are placed on the numbers themselves. There are a number of intricacies that you’ll need to be aware of. The standard bet is where you place your chips on a specific number, but if you place your bets on the dividing lines, you can bet on more than one number with a single chip.

• The line between two squares = both those numbers
• The intersection between 4 numbers = all 4 numbers
• The line at the end of a row = all 3 numbers in that row
• The intersection of 2 rows, at the end of a row = all 6 numbers in those rows
• The intersection of the zero and any of the top row = relevant squares, as per the above rules

“Outside” Bets

The numbers on the wheel are divided into two by colouring them alternately red and black (see: Roulette Wheel Layout). In turn, as well as being able to bet on a specific number, this enables you to bet on the more generic result of the ball landing on either a red or black number.

Like red or black, players can also bet on the ball landing on an odd or even number; 1-18 or 19-36; 1^st 12, 2^nd 12, 3^rd 12; or finally, you can bet on any one of the 3 columns. Additionally, some variants will enable you to bet on certain sectors of the wheel – traditionally referred to by their French names: Voisins du Zero, Orphans and Tiers du Cylindre.

Voisins du Zero

This relates to a relatively large section of the Roulette wheel that generally spans all the numbers from 22 to 25 and includes the zero.

Tiers du Cylindre

This is the section opposite to the Voisins du Zero and spans the numbers from 27 to 33.

Orphans

These are 2 smaller pie slices that sit like wings in between the two other main sections.

Surrounding numbers

Surrounding these 3 options are a list of all the numbers on the wheel. A bet placed on these is actually a bet placed on that number plus the 2 numbers adjacent to that one on either side (i.e. a total of 5 numbers).

Let’s take red vs. black as an example. Without the zero, the odds of winning a bet placed on one of these should be 50%. Including the zero on the board (usually coloured in green, so excluded from both of these), the odds of a bet placed on either red or black is slightly reduced. We’ll show you this mathematically in the next paragraph, so feel free to the next heading if you want…

On most boards, there are 36 numbered slots split evenly between red and black, so the chance of the ball landing in either a red or black slot would be 18 out of 36 = 50%. Adding the zero, means that it’s now 18/37, which is only 48.6% chance of you winning now. Whilst this doesn’t sound like much, casinos play the long game – looking at average results over time rather than the results of individual sessions.

This is where the statistics kick in – this basically says that if you go for a long enough period of time, the effect of unusual outcomes (like a player having a massive win, or a massive loss) is smoothed out, and the result of the game will be in line with the calculated percentage chances of winning. This means that the tiny percentage that the zero brings to the game is a massive deal for the casino, but doesn’t really have a big impact on your experience for a single playing session.

European Roulette

The European Roulette wheel has the numbers 1 to 36, plus a single zero. This is the variant that we have focused on previously when looking at the odds and various systems. (See home page for more on the European Roulette Wheel Layout).

American Roulette

American Roulette differs from European Roulette with the addition of an extra number on the wheel – the “00” or “double zero”. This has the effect of increasing the house’s edge (see the article on this – The Zero), and hence reducing your chances of winning with any particular bet. American Roulette versions online, also tend not to have the additional layout for the sectors of the wheel (Voisins du Zero, Orphans and Tiers du Cylindre).

French Roulette

The French Roulette layout (i.e. the betting area) is slightly different to the European Roulette layout, but it similar in that there is still only a single zero on the wheel. Additionally, the squares are usually not marked as to which are red or black, though you can still bet on this outcome.

Other variations

There are other Roulette variations, plus many real casinos can have subtle “house rules”. Since we are only dealing with Online Roulette, we’ll not go into these here. Most Online Casinos will use one of the 3 variants that we’ve already described in one form or another. Where special rules apply, such, the casinos usually make these differences clear when you load the game.
